Tallberg Foundation Debate: Leadership for a Better Future

What kind of leadership do we need to meet the challenges of the 21st century?

On November 28th, De Balie and Tällberg Foundation organize a public programme on the requirements for leadership in the 21st century, with this year’s nominees of the Tallberg Leadership Prize. The Tallberg Foundation each year recognizes and engages path finding leaders who are seeking to make a difference in a complicated global environment.

The five change makers were selected by an international jury from a pool of 270 nominations from 60 countries.
During this programme these powerful leaders from South Africa to Costa Rica – share their vision on leadership.
All five nominees are women, which brings us to the question of what kind of leadership is needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century. What are the best practices of making a difference in a complicated global environment? Are we moving toward a more collaborative, rather than competitive leadership style?

With inspiring speeches and talks by amongst others:

Thuli Madonsela (South Africa), former Public Protector of South Africa and Chairperson of the African Ombudsman Research Centre in Durban, South Africa. This anti-corruption crusaders is recognized as South Africa’s most popular hero since Nelson Mandela.

Christiana Figueres (Costa Rica) is the former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany. She was the driving force behind the negotiated 2015 Paris Agreement. Her innovative diplomacy helped to deliver the unprecedented climate change agreement last December. She was appointed as Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau in may 2016.

Eleni Antoniadou (Greece) is a multidisciplinary researcher in Regenerative Medicine, Artificial Organ Bioengineering and Space Medicine. She currently serves as the President of the European Health Parliament in Brussels and is an advocate in raising awareness about illegal and immoral organ trafficking.

Sunitha Krishnan, Co-Founder of Prajwala, an anti-trafficking organization; human rights activist; film producer in Hyderabad, India that has evolved pioneering, effective rehabilitation programs for victims of sex crime and sex trafficking. She has also advocated for policy changes and legal reforms for the welfare of victims of sex trafficking.

Celina de Sola is Co-Founder of Glasswing International. This is a community-based education and public health initiative based in El Salvador that works throughout Central America.

The moderator of this programme is Jeroen Smit (publicist and presenter).

Defne Ayas, director Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art and jury member of Tällberg Foundation Leadership Prize, gives an introduction.
