Arnold Schwarzenegger sends a video message to fellow Americans and his friends around the world after January 6, 2021. He compared the storming of the US Capitol to Kristallnacht. Former California Governor condemned “failed leader” Donald Trump as “the worst president ever.”
In his viral video, Schwarzenegger links the Capitol riot to a rampage that was a prelude to the Holocaust. “I grew up in Austria. I’m very aware of Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass,” Schwarzenegger said in his video message. “It was a night of rampage against the Jews carried out in 1938 by the Nazi equivalent of the Proud Boys. Wednesday was the Day of Broken Glass right here in the United States.”
I believe as shaken as we are about the events of recent days, we will become stronger because we now understand what can be lost.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
“I grew up in Austria. I’m very aware of Kristallnacht or the Night of Broken Glass,” he said. “It was a night of rampage against the Jews carried out in 1938 by the Nazi equivalent of the Proud Boys. Wednesday was the Day of Broken Glass right here in the United States. The broken glass was in the windows of the United States Capitol.”
“But the mob did not just shatter the windows of the Capitol,” “They shattered the ideas we took for granted. They did not just break down the doors of the building that housed American democracy. They trampled the very principles on which our country was founded.”
He continued warning, “It all started with lies, lies, lies and intolerance. Being from Europe I’ve seen firsthand how bad things can spin out of control.” Schwarzenegger added that while, he doesn’t think the U.S. is headed as far as Nazi Germany, he argued Trump “sought a coup by misleading people with lies and I know where such lies lead.”
Schwarzenegger urged those listening to be aware of the consequences of “selfishness and cynicism.” Arnold Schwarzenegger believes the America he loves will come back. He added that swords grow more powerful when tempered, for “those who brought us to this unforgivable point”.
“The good thing is he will soon be as irrelevant as an old tweet. But what are we to make of those elected officials who have enabled his lies and his treachery?” he said. “I will remind them of what Teddy Roosevelt said: ‘Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president.”
