LIVE Hearings: Maroš Šefčovič Commissioner – Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight

LIVE Hearings start today with Maroš Šefčovič. The European Parliament tests Maroš Šefčovič general competences, European commitment and specific expertise related to his portfolio.

Vice-President-designate for Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight is heard by the Committees on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) and on Legal Affairs (JURI). The hearing will be in association with Committees on Petition (PETI) and on Industry, Energy and Research (ITRE) of the European Parliament in Brussels.

 

Who is Maroš Šefčovič?

Maroš Šefčovič is a Slovak diplomat and politician who lost the 2019 Slovak presidential election against Zuzana Čaputová. He has been member of the European Commission since 2009, previously serving as the European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth (2009–2010) and Vice-President of the European Commission for Interinstitutional Relations and Administration (2010–2014) and currently as the Vice-President of the European Commission for the Energy Union (since 2014) in charge of the Energy Union and EU Space Policy.

  • Leading the project team “Energy Union”
  • Establishing a European Energy Union by connecting infrastructures, enforcing legislation and increasing competition to help drive down costs for citizens and businesses and boost growth.
  • Working to prevent energy shortages, diversifying sources of energy imports and ensuring a united European voice in negotiations to improve our energy security.
  • Helping to mobilise additional investment in power grids, renewable energy installations and other energy infrastructure
  • Improving energy efficiency, especially for buildings; with a binding target of 30% less energy use by 2030
  • Coordinating the Commission’s efforts to ensure the EU reaches its climate and energy targets for 2020 and 2030
  • Co-Chair of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy

The team of European Commissioners – proposed by its President-elect Ursula von der Leyen – ‘shall be subject as a body to a vote of approval by the European Parliament’.

Before taking this vote, European Parliament committees conduct hearings with the proposed Commissioners in accordance with Parliament’s internal Rules of Procedure.
