A New Deal for Europe: Creating Growth and Employment | #ec16fes

Friedrich Ebert Stiftung | EUROPE CALLING

“A New Deal for Europe: Creating Growth and Employment” 2 June 2016, 6 p.m. – National Historical Museum Athens, Stadiou 13, 10561 Athens

Financial crisis, economic crisis, refugee crisis: Those are the driving forces that are polarising the political debate in Europe. Their severity has contributed to a lack of trust in the ability of the European Union and its member states to find joint solutions for these central challenges.

It’s time to ask: What is keeping Europe together? What unites us? And what kind of progressive European policies are fit to counter the pessimism and legitimate worries caused by theses crisis?

With Europe calling (#ec16fes), the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung will address these questions and discuss them in Brussels (24th of February), Zagreb (24th of May), Athens (2nd of June), Düsseldorf (16th of June) and finally, in Berlin (20th of June). Europe calling is developing ideas for a social, fair and free Europe. Join the discussion!

Speakers:
Prof. Mark Blyth, Professor of International Political Economy at Brown University, USA
Prof. Euclid Tsakalotos, Finance Minister, Greece

Moderated by:
Udo Bullmann, Member of the European Parliament, SPD spokesperson on economic and monetary affairs

Perspectives from young experts:
David Schäfer, Postgraduate Research Student, London School of Economics and Political Science/ Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung scholarship holder
Viktória Nagy, Vice-President of the ETUC Youth Committee/ Member of the Central European Youth Trade Union Network (CEYTUN)

The debate between political economy Professor Mark Blyth (Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea) and the Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos will focus on the negative effects of inequality on economic growth and the creation of jobs as well as new ways to leave the current state of depression.
