EU promotes coding way of life to help Europeans understand and become active in our digital world!

Digital literacy a foundation for everyone

  • Celebrate creating with code
  • Empower people
  • Connect people
  • Get more people interested in science, technology, engineering and maths

EU Code Week is a grassroots initiative which aims to bring coding and digital literacy to everybody in a fun and engaging way. The event run by volunteers and supported by the European Commission. Anyone – schools, teachers, libraries, code clubs, businesses, public authorities – can organise a #CodeWeek activity.

In 2019, EU Code Week will place a special focus on training teachers to increase their confidence to introduce coding and computational thinking into the classroom. To that end, the 2019 edition features a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), an updated database of materials and an improved website. These actions prepare, encourage, and empower the community ahead of EU Code Week which will take place between the 5th and the 20th of October 2019.

EU Code Week

What do you need in order to organise an activity?

A group of people willing to learn. For example, your friends, kids, teenagers, adults colleagues, friends, parents or grandparents. Remember, two is a group already!

Teachers or trainers who are familiar with the coding activity, and how to teach and inspire others. The number depends on the type and size of the activity.

A place to learn. Classrooms, libraries, conference rooms and various public spaces all make a great activity venue.

Computers and internet connection. Depending on your target group, you might ask participants to bring their own laptops.

In order to support as many students as possible in their creative journeys to coding, Code Week organisers are also invited to participate in the Code Week 4 All challenge.

A Certificate of Excellence can be achieved for those who achieve the most influential participation and include at least ten activities, 500 students, or three countries within their circles.

European Digital Education Action Plan

The European Commission supports the initiative as a part of its Digital Single Market strategy and Code Week is also one of the actions under the European Digital Education Action Plan. With its aim to reach schools all over Europe, EU Code Week contributes to making “digital literacy a foundation for everyone” as set out in the political guidelines of the new European Commission president-elect Ursula von der Leyen.
